One of the greatest teachers imaginable. Unforgettable. A leather-clad, motorbiking science genius with every last Razzy roughneck under his capable thumbs. He could control the disruptive children, but he could drive on the very brightest and keep everyone else on track, too. Tough yet soft. Firm and wise. No bull. Every one of us in his thrall. Unbelievable that he didn't get even a full decade of such a well-earned retirement. So many of us owe him so much- I have friends who are now doctors and scientists and psychologists and teachers who would not be where they are now without him. The most unique, gruff, clever, straight-down-the-line human being, mentor, scientist and friend. Very relieved we fussed him when he retired. But like so many of my friends I'm devastated we didn't have one last chance to tell him all that he was to us all. Heartbroken. He will never be forgotten.

Mr Sykes. The definition of a gentleman and the best teacher to have ever existed. He made me believe in myself even when I didn't. He gave me the confidence to aim high and achieve high. He was my pillar of support during my years at Rastrick & was just as pleased as my family when I got into medical school & subsequently became a doctor. I attribute where I am today, to the hard work he put into my schooling when I needed it the most. I just wish I could tell him again in person. He was funny, direct, intelligent & so cool! Such a dude. I have never forgotten & will never forget the impact he had on my life then & now. When I look back at that time, he contributed massively to the direction I have taken & I feel blessed to have known him.
