Star - How to help children with a funeral
A death in the family can be a confusing time for children. We aim to answer some of the questions that children will ask, and to assist parents with some of the more difficult decisions they will have to make. These decisions may include;
- Should my child attend the funeral?
- How much should I tell my child about the funeral process?
- How do I explain what a funeral is?
(STAR) a Special Time to Always Remember
A funeral is often seen as a ‘taboo’ subject around children. In contrast to other equally important family occasions, such as birthdays and weddings, many children do not attend the funeral, due to the fact that adults around them are struggling with their own grief and sadness and simply don’t know what to say.
The days surrounding a death can be a confusing and difficult time. Altered daily routines and unfamiliar sights and sounds can be difficult for children to understand and cope with. After all, children notice even the most subtle changes in their routines and surroundings.
We are here to make this time easier for everyone involved. To do this, we have introduced STAR (a Special Time to Always Remember). STAR is a sensitive, caring approach to help children understand what a funeral is. We will encourage children to take a more active part in the funeral, and to allay fears about what the funeral is all about, by giving them the opportunity to hear the words of the funeral process, to express their feelings and concerns, and to write a STAR message to their loved one who has died.
We anticipate that this special time together will be when parents come to view the person who has died, or at a mutually agreed time.
